FIMM
FIMM is an international research institute
with a primary mission to perform innova-
tive research to understand the drivers of
human health and disease. Hosted by the
University of Helsinki and in close coopera-
tive affiliation with EMBL, we aim to deliver
improvements to the safety, efficacy, and
efficiency of healthcare in Finland and
beyond.
The Institute for Molecular Medicine Finland (FIMM) was
founded in 2006, started its research activities in 2008 and Finnish node of the Nordic EMBL Partnership for Molecular
has grown into an international institute with ~270 em-
ployees representing ~ 30 nationalities, 22 group leaders
and a budget of ~30 M€ with >85% of the funding coming
from external, competitive sources.
FIMM is hosted by the University of Helsinki, and in 2017
joined the Helsinki Institute of Life Science (HiLIFE), a
leading life science research institute in the Nordics, as a Since 2013, FIMM also participates in the EU-LIFE alliance
scientifically and financially independent operational unit. of 15 leading European life sciences research institutes.
We are located at the Meilahti medical campus in Helsinki
– Finland’s leading hub of academic medical research and
medical care.
FIMM is a translational science institute with a driving
mission to perform innovative research on patients and
populations—utilising molecular, genomic, and health
data—targeted towards understanding drivers of health
and disease and delivering improvements to the safety, ef-
ficacy, and efficiency of healthcare in Finland and beyond.
To deliver on this ambitious mission, we have created a
research institute where we integrate molecular medicine
FIMM – Building a Bridge from Discovery to Medicine
research with cutting-edge technology platforms, and
we foster interdisciplinary team approaches to address
challenges in human health. Our Grand Challenge pro-
grammes align our research on large and complex issues
and draw our researchers, technology experts and clinical
collaborators together in pursuit of the biggest advance-
ments possible.
FIMM is characterised first and foremost by its partnership
with the flagship of European biosciences research, the Eu-
ropean Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL). FIMM is the
Medicine, one of the earliest remote Partnerships EMBL
has established. We follow the EMBL operational model
and principles, aiming at scientific excellence and estab-
lishing mechanisms for independent, regular scientific
evaluation of research activities, scientific integrity and
good scientific practice, as well as commitment to interna-
tional recruitment and significant levels of staff turnover.
This network aims to support and strengthen research
excellence, and acts as a voice for researchers in European
policy, impacting health systems and society.
Our achievements during the first 15 years position FIMM
on a highly competitive, international level in terms of sci-
entific excellence and output, staff recruitment, external
funding, scientific culture and, most importantly, quality
and societal impact of science.
