The purpose of the Finnish Cultural Foundation, according to its
charter, is to “promote and develop national cultural and economic
life” in Finland. The Finnish Cultural Foundation comprises a
Foundation, founded in 1939, and an Association, founded in 1937.
The Foundation includes a Central Fund and 17 regional funds.

The assets of the Foundation are based on donations and bequests
received over more than 80 years. The assets are divided between a
Central Fund, regional funds, and almost 900 donor funds.

Grants are the most visible and important means of fulfilling
the charter. The Foundation provides grants to individuals and
groups working in the sciences and the arts, and to people and
organisations in other fields of intellectual and cultural endeavour,
in accordance with purposes defined by donors.

In addition to providing grants, the Foundation has its own
operations in the fields of science, the arts and culture. The
Foundation has initiated and, together with partners, carried out
several projects of wide influence on society. The Foundation also
runs the Kirpilä Art Collection in Helsinki as well as organising the
Mirjam Helin International Singing Competition every five years.
