FINLAND is the easternmost of the EU countries. By area it is the
7th largest country in Europe covering 338 000 sq. km, of which 10 %
is water (187 888 lakes), 69 % forest and 8 % cultivated.The maximum
length of the country is 1160 km (721 miles) and the maximum width
540 km (336 miles).
THE POPULATION of Finland is about 5 604 558 giving a pop-
ulation density of 17 inhabitants per square kilometre. 92 % speaks
Finnish and 6 % are Swedish speaking. A vast majority of the Finns are
Lutheran (85.6 %) by religion and 1.1 % are Eastern Orthodox.
FORM OF GOVERNMENT: Independent republic since Decem-
ber 6, 1917. Parliament consists of one chamber with 200 members
elected for a term of four years by direct and proportional election.
CLIMATE: Owing to the vicinity of the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf
Stream, Finland’s climate is temperate. Summer in Finland is warm,
bright and exhilarating. Most important, the air in this Scandinavian
country is fresh, clean, pure and invigorating at all times of the year. Low
humidity makes winter temperatures generally feel a lot warmer than
thermometer readings would suggest.
CURRENCY REGULATIONS: Euro is the official currency in
Finland.There are no restrictions on the importation or exportation of
currency, as far as travellers are concerned.
BANKS are open Monday-Friday 9.15-16.15 (office hours may
vary regionally). Closed on Saturdays.
ELECTRICAL APPLIANCES The electric current in Finland is
220V (230V), 50Hz. Plugs are two-pin continental European standard.
EMERGENCIES Dial 112. Other emergency numbers and instruc-
tions can be found in telephone booths and directories.
MOTORING: Finland has right-hand traffic with overtaking on the
left.There is a variable speed limit of 60-80-100 kph for all roads.The
restrictions are indicated by signs. If no signs are posted, the basic speed
limit is always 80 kph. On motorways the normal speed limit is 120 kph
in summer and 100 kph in winter. Usually, there is a speed limit of 40-60
kph in built-up areas. Most road signs are similar to those used else-
where in continental Europe. All motor vehicles must use headlights at
all times of the day regardless of weather conditions.
Caravan width. The maximum width is 2.6 meters. If a trailer exceeds
2.3 m in width, it may not exceed the registered width of the vehicle
pulling it by more than 0.6 m.
Compulsory use of seat belts. In private cars seat belts must be
worn by the driver and all passengers, front and back, in taxis the rule
applies to all passengers.
Driving and alcohol. Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs
is forbidden There is an exact maximum limit of 0.5 ‰ of alcohol in
the blood. Infringement of this rule nearly always brings a penalty in the
form of a fine or imprisonment. 1.2 ‰ is the limit for heavy penalties.
MEDICAL SERVICES Medicines are sold only at pharmacies (in
Finnish Apteekki).
POST OFFICES AND MAIL Post offices are generally open
from 9 – 18 Monday to Friday, times may vary locally.
SAUNA AND SWIMMING There is one sauna per every three
people in Finland and visitors will find them everywhere – in hotels,
private homes, on board ships, at motels and in holiday villages.

sprechen etwa 1.700 Einwohner Samisch. Finnland hat etwa 5 604 558
Einwohner.
KLIMA Dank seines Kontinentalklimas mit warmen Sommern und
kalten Wintern erreicht Süd-Ostfinnland im Sommer die höchsten
Durchschnittstemperaturen Skandinaviens. Die finnische Westküste
gehört sogar zu den sonnigsten Gebieten Nordeuropas. Was aber
noch wichtiger ist: Finnlands Luft ist zu jeder Zeit klar und anregend.
EINREISEPAPIERE Besucher aus EU-Ländern, Island und Nor-
wegen sowie Liechtenstein, San Marino und der Schweiz benötigen
lediglich einen gültigen Personalausweis. Alle anderen Nationalitäten
müssen einen gültigen Reisepaß ggfs. mit Visum vorlegen.
Verkehrregel ALLGEMEINE BESTIMMUNGEN Finnland ist ver-
kehrsmäßig bestens werschlossen. Es herrscht Rechtsverkehr. ”Leiser
Verkehr” ist Vorschrift, akustische Warnsignale dürfen nur bei drohen-

zeit mit Abblendlicht fahren
ELCHE UND RENTIERE überqueren die Strassen vor allem bei
Dämmerung. Es ist also dringend geraten, die aufgestellten Warnschil-
der zu beachten. Nach einem Wildunfall ist unverzüglich die nächste
Polizeidienststelle zu informieren (Notruf 112).
GESCHWINDIGKEITSBEGRENZUNGEN In geschlosse-
nen Ortschaften gilt eine Geschwindigkeitsbegrenzung von 50 km/h,
ausserhalb ist die zulässige Höchstgeschwindigkeit (auf Landstrassen
bis 100 km/h, auf Autobahnen im Sommer bis 120 km/h) weitgehend
ausgeschildert. Soweit keine Beschilderung vorhanden ist, darf nicht
schneller als 80 km/h gefahren werden.
GASFLASCHEN Ausländische Gasflaschen werden an finnischen
Tankstellen nicht ausgetauscht. Es empfiehlt sich deshalb, das für den
Aufenthalt benötigte Gas mitzubringen.
GELD / GELDWECHSEL Euro ist die offizielle Währung. Geld-
wechsel ist problemlos bei allen Banken (Mo–Fr 9.15–16.15 Uhr, kann
örtlich variieren). Darüber hinaus ist es mit der EC-Karte möglich, bei
den meisten Bankautomaten Geld abzuheben.
POST Die Postämter sind meistens Mo-Fr von 9-18 Uhr geöffnet.
NORMEN In Finnland gelten das metrische und das Dezimalsystem.
Die Größenangaben für Bekleidung und Schuhe entsprechen den mit-
teleuropäischen.
STROM Finnland hat 220V (50Hz) Wechselstrom. Die Normen für
Geräte und Steckdosen sind die-selben wie z.B. in Deutschland und
Österreich.
MÜCKEN Finnland ist das Land der vielen Seen. Die Natur ist noch
sauber und rein. Das zieht auch die Mücken an – aber nur für wenige
Wochen im Hochsommer. Besonders in Nordfinnland ist Mücken-
schutz angeraten. Erprobte Mittel – vielfach auf pflanzlicher Basis –
werden in Drogerien und Apotheken angeboten.
MEDIZINISCHE VERSORGUNG Medizinische Versorgung
von hohem Standard ist im ganzen Land gewährleistet. Bei Erkran-
kung oder Unfall gilt das deutsch/österreichisch-finnische Sozialversi-
cherungsabkommen. Es beinhaltet die ambulante Versorgung in den in
Finnland üblichen Gesundheitszentren „Terveyskeskus“ und Poliklini-
ken. Neben dem öffentlichen Gesundheitssystem gibt es (recht teure)
niedergelassene Ärzte. Apotheken: Finnisch ”Apteekki”. Impfungen: Für
Finnland sind keine Impfungen vorgeschrieben.
